Formal Feelings

“After great pain, a formal feeling comes.” - Emily Dickinson

That formal feeling gives us something a bit more tangible to put our sadness in and really get our brains around it.

It’s the only way to get through it and, ultimately, get over it.

When pain is still so abstract and uncontained, it cannot be effectively understood or managed.

Like a great thundercloud hovering overhead, it just lurks and haunts. But once it starts to rain, the storm has a beginning and therefore anend.

And the rain can be a welcome relief after the uncertainty of that terrible undefined cloud of pain.
